I have just returned from an all too brief visit to the lovely Residence Hotel & Spa in Tunisia, where a small group of us were taken to experience the property for a couple of nights.
Tunisia, especially with the events of the last 2 years, has largely been overlooked, especially in the Luxury sector, but The Residence is a gem in a sea of ‘mainstream’ Hotel options that Tunisia is generally regarded as offering.
Set just outside Tunis city, and close to the fantastic Roman ruins at Carthage, The Residence is a lovely spot to soak up the late summer sun. The Pool area is very large, with no shortage of sunbeds, and was very tranquil despite the Hotel being fairly full on the weekend I visited.
The Sea View room I had was very nice indeed, with the only grade above that being a Suite, – which in all honesty, provided more room perhaps for 2 people than they would realistically need.
The main Hotel area’s were elegant, and the Restaurants we sampled excellent too, so most definitely 5*.
The Hotel also has its own 18hole Golf Course, designed by Trent-Jones, and is the best available in Tunisia. It was in immaculate condition, and presents a ‘Links’ style layout to challenge most, – not too hard from the Yellow/Blue tees, but with enough Bunkers & water hazards to spoil any card without care. Many of the holes are lined with Villa’s on either or one side, but most of the back 9 skirts around the inland lake where birdlife is prolific, and wayward balls are doomed.
Tunisia is undergoing a transitional phase, with free elections around the corner, and a rebuilding of much of the infrastructure, but this shouldn’t deter any visitors. The people are very friendly and accommodating, and walking anywhere is completely safe.
All in all, as the title suggests, a Gem in Tunisia.
